Toyota has been building trucks ever since 1935, when it was still a part of Toyoda Automated Loom Works in Japan. (The company rebranded itself at “Toyota” when it was incorporated as a stand-alone automaker in 1937, mostly because it sounds better in Japanese than “Toyoda.”) As for the Toyota Tacoma, it first debuted in 1995 as part of the company’s efforts to conquer the small-truck market. In fact, the original Tacoma was designed at the automaker’s Calty Design Research facility in California. Needless to say, those efforts worked, and the Tacoma has today become one of the top-selling trucks in the United States.
